Celebrating St. Stephen’s Day and Hungarian Culture in Calgary

HEPA proudly supported two significant events at EH Mangalitsa Farm near Calgary, Alberta, showcasing Hungarian traditions and culinary excellence, with a special focus on St. Stephen’s Day.

Mangalica Dinner: A unique gastronomic experience took place with a Mangalica dinner, where nearly 50 guests enjoyed an exclusive 4-course meal. This event, hosted by Christina Arcand-Stender and organized with the professional support of HEPA’s Canadian Regional Office and the Hungarian Mangalica Breeders’ National Association (MOE), featured premium Hungarian products. Sándor Balla, Executive Director of HEPA Regional Office Canada, traveled from Toronto to Calgary to emphasize the growing presence and influence of Hungarian cuisine in Canada.

St. Stephen’s Day Celebration: The following day, over 600 participants gathered to celebrate St. Stephen’s Day at the Mangalica Festival. The festival featured a diverse program, including a stew cooking competition, a petting zoo, face painting, folk dance presentations, and a fair. This vibrant celebration provided a memorable experience and highlighted the significance of St. Stephen’s Day.

The stew cooking competition, a highlight of the festival, saw four teams compete for a Hungarian gastro package provided by HEPA Regional Office Canada. Sándor Balla expressed his appreciation to the organizers and participants, noting that such events play a crucial role in strengthening connections within Hungarian communities abroad and preserving our cultural heritage.

HEPA Regional Office Canada is honored to have supported these events, celebrating Hungarian culture and St. Stephen’s Day, and bringing our traditions to Canada while enriching community connections.
