Dr. Anita Orbán, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, joined Toronto’s Hungarian community at the 1956 Memorial in Budapest Park on September 27. The ceremony honoured the heroes of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight and marked the beginning of Ontario Hungarian Heritage Month.
In her commemorative address, Dr. Anita Orbán paid tribute to the courage and steadfastness of those who stood for freedom in 1956. She also recognized the Hungarians who came to Canada after the Revolution and their role in building the Hungarian Canadian community and preserving its heritage for future generations.

The ceremony included a flag-raising and the laying of wreaths at the memorial on the shores of Lake Ontario.
Sándor Balla, Executive Director of HEPA Regional Office Canada, offered a blessing in remembrance of the heroes of 1956.
Miklós Lengyel, Hungary’s Ambassador to Canada; Péter Szabó, Deputy Head of Mission in Toronto; and Helga Pritz, Consul General of Hungary in Montreal, attended alongside diplomatic representatives and leaders of Hungarian organizations in Toronto.
