On June 5, Air Canada’s first direct flight between Toronto and Budapest departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport, marking a significant milestone in Hungarian–Canadian relations and creating new opportunities for economic, tourism, and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
The launch of the new route is the result of several years of coordinated efforts and close collaboration among the Embassy of Hungary in Ottawa, the Consulate General of Hungary in Toronto, and the HEPA Regional Office Canada.
The ceremonial event was attended by numerous distinguished guests, including Miklós Lengyel, Ambassador of Hungary to Canada; Dr. János Jákó, Consul General of Hungary in Toronto; Réka Makray, Economic and Trade Attaché; Máté Árpád Igaz, Deputy Head of Mission and Economic and Trade Attaché; and Dániel Németh, Economic and Trade Attaché. Representing Canadian public life were Michael Tibollo, Associate Attorney General of Ontario, and Ahmed Hussen, Member of Parliament, alongside senior representatives of Air Canada, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), and leaders from the tourism and business sectors.
HEPA Hungarian Export Promotion Agency was represented by Sándor Balla, Executive Director of the HEPA Regional Office Canada, and Balázs Csutora, expert responsible for Canadian relations.
The cultural program featured a traditional Hungarian folk dance performance by the Rozmaring Ensemble of Hamilton, which welcomed passengers of the inaugural flight and showcased Hungary’s rich cultural heritage.
The new direct air connection is expected to significantly enhance mobility between Hungary and Canada while supporting the continued growth of bilateral trade, investment, tourism, and diaspora relations. The route represents an important step in bringing the two countries closer together and creating new opportunities for cooperation in the years ahead.
