Toronto recently hosted the first events of the Hungarian Culinary Sessions series, a showcase of Hungary’s vibrant gastronomy and beverage industry for a professional audience. Organized by the Consulate General of Hungary in Toronto and co-organized by HEPA – the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency, the series aims to introduce Canadian professionals to Hungary’s innovative culinary offerings while promoting the country’s food and beverage exports.
The events featured chefs Áron Kelemen and Dániel Singlár from Budapest’s acclaimed Balagan, who presented contemporary interpretations of traditional Hungarian dishes. Using authentic ingredients such as mangalica bacon and premium Hungarian paprika, the chefs created a unique dining experience that blended tradition with modern culinary techniques. The sessions were hosted at the Michelin-recommended Azura Restaurant, providing an elegant backdrop for the evening.
Complementing the cuisine, József Sáfián, HEPA’s Director of Beverages, presented a curated selection of wines from Sauska, Takler, Patricius, Bolyki, and Bock wineries, highlighting the quality and diversity of Hungary’s wine industry. Guests also enjoyed unique cocktails by Máté Szabó (Elysian Bar, Budapest) and whiskeys from Gemenc Distillery, introduced by László Trefán. The event was further strengthened by the presence of LCBO representatives, including Abhay Garg (Vice President) and Courtney Dawson (Senior Category Manager, European Wines), underscoring the professional and commercial significance of the series.
“This series provides an excellent platform to showcase the innovation and quality of Hungarian gastronomy to international markets,” said Sándor Balla, Executive Director of HEPA Regional Office Canada. “By connecting Canadian professionals with Hungarian producers, we aim to strengthen trade relationships and promote Hungary as a hub of culinary excellence.”
The strong interest in Hungarian flavours and innovation was evident throughout the evening, demonstrating the growing appetite for high-quality Hungarian products in Canada. The Hungarian Culinary Sessions series will continue in December, offering further opportunities to experience Hungary’s culinary artistry and promoting the country’s food and beverage sector to Canadian audiences.
