Honoring the Heroes of 1956 at Queen’s Park

The HEPA Regional Office Canada proudly took part in commemorating the 1956 Hungarian Revolution at Ontario Parliament in Toronto, celebrating the bravery and sacrifice of Hungarian freedom fighters. Notably, the event featured a ceremonial raising of the Hungarian national flag by Dr. Gábor Péter Artner, Deputy CEO of HEPA, and Dr. János Jákó, Consul General of Hungary in Toronto. This act highlighted Hungary’s enduring cultural heritage and the strong ties between Hungary and Canada. Moreover, the ceremony attracted attention from both the Hungarian diaspora and Canadian officials. As a result, it highlighted the significance of international cultural diplomacy.

Unveiling the Commemorative Plaque

Afterward a commemorative plaque, created by the Ontario Heritage Trust, was unveiled to honor the heroes of 1956. This plaque serves as a permanent reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom during the revolution. In addition it reinforces the importance of remembering and celebrating Hungarian history abroad.

Dignitaries in attendance included:

  • Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance

  • Graham McGregor, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism

  • Members of the Hungarian Consulate and HEPA team

Furthermore the presence of Canadian government officials reflected the strong political and cultural ties between Hungary and Canada. Consequently it underscored the importance of honoring historical milestones with international participation.
